August Music Mailout: Nonsemble Album, Maps Shows

Having pulled back from social media, I now send monthly text-only emails to my mailing list. I’ll be posting them here on the blog for posterity. This is the August edition.

Dear Friends,

Some big news in this email! So I’ll skip my preamble and get right into it.

/ NONSEMBLE FORTHCOMING ALBUM
My indie-classical group Nonsemble has been working for years now on a suite of works foregrounding strings and electronics, inspired by prehistoric birds. This work has now come together as an album entitled Archaeopteryx, and it will be out in October. We are very proud of it and can’t wait for you to hear it.

In the lead up we have a few singles for you, the first of which will be out on August 23 with a remix on the B-Side by the magical Madeleine Cocolas.

You can also catch some of the new album live when we play Jungle Love Festival, September 2-4!

// FIBREGLASS FORESTRY LIVESTREAM
This is once again Nonsemble news... Back in 2016 I wrote a piece which I still consider to be one of the best things I’ve written. It was for a Dots+Loops show at GoMA, ran about 20 minutes, and involved an expanded crew of 9 strings, plus the usual piano, drums, bass.

We’ve enlisted extra stringy friends to perform “Fibreglass Forestry” for the second time ever at UQ on August 18. We’re also premiering an excellent brand new piece by my old friend and long-term collaborator Briony Luttrell.

You can register to come to the show in person or watch the livestream

Nonsemble UQ Lunchtime Concert
Thursday 18 August, 1pm-2pm.

/// MR. MAPS SHOWS AND LIVE RECORDING
I mentioned in a previous communication that Mr. Maps - my instrumental math-rock band of years gone by, which some have called “legendary” - has reformed to write tunes and play shows.

I wanted to share this live recording with you from Netherworld a few months back. This is a new song, working title “Bam Bam”. I hope you dig it as much as we do! If so, come see us play it for you on one of these dates:

AUGUST 13 - SONIC MASALA FESTIVAL - The Triffid, Brisbane
SEPTEMBER 2-4 - JUNGLE LOVE FESTIVAL. - Jimna, QLD

//// COOL HAPPENINGS AROUND THE PLACE
Old buddies Pete Foley and Scott Ford (aka Fuzzy Ghost) have made a beautiful and surreal game called “Queer Man Peering Into a Rock Pool.jpg”, you should go and play it.

My friend (and boss actually) Eve Klein made this incredible thing called City Symphony, where you download an app, walk around Brisbane CBD, and listen to interactive content full of stories and music and sounds from an incredible and diverse group of collaborators.

My friend Madeleine Cocolas has a new solo album out through ROOM40 called Spectral, and an EP out with monster saxophonist Marike Van Dijk through 4000 Records.

Thank you for sticking around on my little mailing list. As usual, if these emails cease to be your bag, throw me an “unsubscribe” and they’ll be gone from your life.

The origin of this mailing list was of course my retraction from social media, and not a day goes by that I regret not having a Facebook, Instagram, or twitter account. But for me as a musician, it’s illuminated the difficulty of music reaching ears without it riding on a constant barrage of social media content.

If you’ve got a friend who you think would dig getting these emails, please forward this to them and suggest they sign up! They remain monthly-ish, text-only, and analytic-free.

All the best everyone!

Chris
