This track caught my attention - stock standard plastic j-pop until about 1:38, when it goes into an amazing polyrhythm/isorhythm frenzy for about 30 secs. I don’t know if I love it or hate it. It’s nice to see pop music incorporating some rhythmically interesting ideas, but at the same time it’s not really incorporated into the song at all. I would really like to see the polyrhythms weaved into the song as a whole…

In fact if it was me I’d probably just get of rid of all that verse chorus junk and expand the 30 seconds of rhythmic goodness into a 6 minute track, but I don’t think that would be as commercially successful.

I think what I do enjoy is the interplay between pretty, simple melody/harmony and complex, challenging rhythms. Resulting in something which is quite frantic but still uplifting. This is definitely a recurring theme in my musical taste of late.
